A Love You Can’t Live Without
Miami artist David Zalben is performing A Love You Can’t Live Without, a free-wheeling poetic installation about love, sex and relationships. Zalben will write prose in his signature wire-graffiti style in the main windows of ArtCenter/South Florida. Adding verses to his poem every night, the storefront space will be completely engulfed by an unfettered stream of risqué consciousness by the performance end, July 16, 2012. He is by nature a controlled individual who gravitates toward structured lines and form. The spatial constraints of the 12 x 12-foot window will force him to twist and squeeze words into limited white space, breaking free from his traditionally linear and clean wire text. In a jungle of wire wordage, his thoughts will be one part reality – based upon his real experiences – and another part fantasy; all will be exposed as a long laundry list of feelings, allowing onlookers to follow, critique and enjoy the ride of Zalben’s daily musings. ArtCenter/South Florida, 800 Lincoln Rd; Miami Beach. For info: 305.310.4256 or davidzz.com.

Olympia
The first public exhibition of artist Jacob Gossett’s artwork is Olympia, a series of paintings and video about Bodybuilding. Don’t miss a live performance of Gossett’s electro-R&B group, Beacon, who will play at The Vagabond after the opening of the exhibit. Gossett grew up surrounded by athletic culture. Over the past few years, his work has dealt with the cult(ure) of flesh: body politics, competition and aggression, and the physical ideal in the arts. Similarly, Beacon is known for their intensely visual performances and videos based upon sexual fantasy. For Olympia, Gossett has made four large-scale and tightly cropped paintings of flexing Mr. Olympians out of Creatine powder mixed with epoxy resin. Just as weightlifting breaks down the body so that it can become larger and more defined, these compositions, rendered in a dot matrix, are only cohesive when viewed from afar. As the spectator approaches the canvas, they disintegrate. The paintings will be presented alongside a looped video of an athlete training in a dank basement room covered in photographs of bulging muscles. Opening reception 7-9pm. Charest-Weinberg Gallery, 250 NW 23rd St; Miami. For info: 305-292-0411 or charestweinberg.com

Mark K. Shriver
In this intimate portrait of an extraordinary father-son relationship, Mark K. Shriver discovers the moral principles that guided his legendary father and applies them to his own life When Sargent “Sarge” Shriver—founder of the Peace Corps and architect of President Johnson’s War on Poverty—died in 2011 after a valiant fight with Alzheimer’s, thousands of tributes poured in from friends and strangers worldwide. These tributes, which extolled the daily kindness and humanity of “a good man,” moved his son Mark far more than those who lauded Sarge for his big-stage, headline-making accomplishments. After a lifetime searching for the path to his father’s success in the public arena, Mark instead turns to a search for the secret of his father’s joy, his devotion to others, and his sense of purpose. In the process, Mark discovers much about himself, as a father, as a husband, and as a social justice advocate. A Good Man is an inspirational and deeply personal story about a son discovering the true meaning of his father’s legacy. Meet the author when he reads from his book. 8pm.
