Applying his wide- ranging knowledge and expertise on issues ranging from military spending to same-sex marriage to educational reform, he stresses the importance of creating policies we can be proud of. Finally, with 2012 looming, McGovern’s What It Means to Be a Democrat (Blue Rider, $22.95) offers a vision of the Party’s future in which ideological coherence and courage rule. 6:30pm. Carlos Rodriguez-Feo
Beyond The Visual Spectrum: Explorations in Alternative Photography the first solo exhibit of resident artist Carlos Rodriguez-Feo opens tonight. The photographic works and accompanying rare camera collection featured in ‘Beyond The Visual Spectrum: Explorations in Alternative Photography form a comprehensive expression of Carlos Rodriguez-Feo’s mantra – ‘Rescuing Photographic Sensibilities’. The Cuban-born artist accomplishes this by taking the South Florida landscape and its landmarks on a journey through alternative processes that combine modern technology with vintage tools and techniques. The organic nature and iconic vocabulary of Rodriguez-Feo’s subjects help them function as visual ‘controls’ by which he showcases infrared photography, silver gelatin photography, hybrid silver gelatin and digital processing, instant image transfers, and pinhole photography. The conversation between old and new, natural light and the invisible spectrum ‘drawn’ out, is carried further with Carlos Rodriguez-Feo’s extensive collection of rare and antique cameras, used in creating the images in the exhibit, and on display to the public exclusively for the opening. 6pm. At an all-black army camp, civilian parachute maker and “hot bundle” Carmen Jones is desired by many of the men. Naturally, she wants Joe, who’s engaged to sweet Cindy Lou and about to go into pilot training for the Korean War. Going after him, she succeeds only in getting him into the stockade. While she awaits his release, trouble approaches for both of them. Songs from the Bizet opera with modernized lyrics. 6:15pm & 8:30pm. Stay forDorothy Dandridge: In-Concert Series. Born November 9, 1922, in Cleveland, Ohio, Dorothy Dandridge sang at Harlem’s Cotton Club and Apollo Theatre and became the first African American woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. Many years passed before the entertainment industry acknowledged Dandridge’s legacy. Her next role, as the eponymous lead in Carmen Jones (1954),a film adaptation of Bizet’s opera Carmen that also costarred Belafonte, catapulted her to the heights of stardom. With her sultry looks and flirtatious style, Dandridge became the first African-American to earn an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Though many believed she deserved to win, Dandridge eventually lost the award to Grace Kelly (The Country Girl). Still, after the phenomenal success of Carmen Jones, Dandridge seemed well on her way to becoming the first non-white actress to achieve the kind of superstardom that had accrued to contemporaries like Marilyn Monroe and Ava Gardner. In 1955, she was featured on the cover of Life magazine, and was treated like visiting royalty at that year’s Cannes Film Festival. 8:30pm & 10:30. Cash bar and snacks. Free. Mac Stone
The final Sea Secrets Lecture of the 2012 season will take place tonight. It will feature accomplished field biologist and wildlife photographer, Mac Stone. Ever since early settlers arrived in Florida, the Southern Everglades were feared and revered by even the bravest explorers who dared to enter its waters. In the last hundred years however, increased competition for fresh water has impacted the coastal and marine environment, endangering one of the state’s most biodiverse habitats. The University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science and the Ocean Research and Education Foundation host the popular Sea Secrets lecture series. The events are free and open to the public, and are designed to provide insight and information about the oceans that cover two-thirds of our planet, and much of which, are still an enigma. Lectures are preceded by a Reception 5:30pm. Lecture 6pm. Rosenstiel School of Atmospheric Science, 4600 Rickenbacker Causeway; Miami. For info: rsmas.miami.edu

Art
Lynne Golob Gelfman: Scapes
Abstract painter, Lynne Golob Gelfman’s works are rooted in the visible world. She identifies and isolates textures, forms or patterns, either natural or manmade, then repeats them to create compositions that seem as if they could flow forever in all directions. In recent years, inspired by morning walks along the Miami shore, she has been making works that evoke the reflection of light on water. But as a result of their repetitive markings, her works become as much about the process of their own making as about any outside source. 6-9 pm. The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum, 10975 SW 17th St; Miami. For info: thefrost.fiu.edu

Books
Andy Cohen
From a young age, Andy Cohen knew two things: He was gay, and he loved television. Now presiding over Bravo’s reality-TV empire, he started out as an overly talkative pop-culture obsessive, devoted to Charlie’s Angels and All My Children—and to his mother, who received daily letters from him while he was at summer camp, usually reminding her to tape the soaps. In retrospect, it’s hard to believe that everyone didn’t know that Andy was gay; still, he remained in the closet until college. Finally out, he embarked on making a career out of his passion for television. The journey begins with Andy interviewing his all-time idol Susan Lucci for his college newspaper and ends with him in a job where he has a hand in creating today’s celebrity icons. In the witty, no-holds-barred style of his show Watch What Happens: Live, Cohen tells tales of absurd network-news mishaps, hilarious encounters with the heroines of his youth, and the real stories behind the Real Housewives. Dishy, funny, and full of heart, Most Talkative (Henry Holt, $25) provides a one-of-a-kind glimpse into the world of television, from a fan who grew up watching the screen and is now inside the TV, both making shows and hosting his own. Cohen will read from and sign his book tonight. 8pm. Free. Books and books, 265 Aragon Ave; Coral Gables. For info: booksandbooks.com
