The extravagant, enigmatic, and inviting musical production of Stephen Schwartz’s Pippin from Wolfson Opera Ensemble. Pippin is a pop-rock musical and is the story of a young prince who strives for a higher purpose in life through the glory of the battlefield, sexual temptation, involvement in politics, and love. In conjunction with the exhibition The Record: Contemporary Art and Vinyl, on view at MAM through June 10, 2012, Miami Art Museum’s second panel discussion focuses on The 1970s through the mid-90s. The Bruce Hornsby Creative American Music Program is directed by Professor Rey Sanchez, in collaboration with Grammy Award-winning songwriter Bruce Hornsby. Roméo et Juliette
The final production of the season will be Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, not seen at FGO since 2004. Of the many operatic treatments of Shakespeare’s play, Gounod’s has been the most enduring, with its perfect depiction of the unrestrained passion of youth, and the bitter tragedy visited on the rival Capulet and Montague families. Nu Flamenco
World-renowned guitarist and composer from Spain José Luis Rodriguez performs tonight with dancer Niurca Márquez in Nu Flamenco. Jazzapalooza
The first of three musical events in NMB Concert Series, Jazzapalooza features the University of Miami Frost Concert Jazz Band. The UM Faculty Exhibit features the work of Darby Bannard: Recent Painting. Throughout his career Bannard has made original contributions to the field of art. In 1970 he began to use the new acrylic medium, which evolved into his ground-breaking paintings of colorful expanses of richly colored gels applied with squeegees, rakes and brooms. For over 45 years people across the world have enjoyed his pictures starting with his first solo exhibit in NYC in 1965. New at the Frost Art Museum is Ursula von Rydingsvard: Sculpture, a traveling exhibition that includes a selection of the artist’s most significant sculptures, including wall reliefs and monumental cedar works created from 1991 to 2009. Von Rydingsvard is renowned for creating large-scale, often monumental sculpture from cedar beams which she painstakingly cuts, assembles, glues, clamps and laminates, finally rubbing powered graphite into the work’s textured surfaces. Her signature shapes are abstract, with references to things from the real world. The exhibition was recently honored with the U.S. section of the International Association of Art Critics’ annual award for Best Show in a Non-Profit Gallery or Space for its premiere at the SculptureCenter, NY. A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings
Pulitzer Prize winner Nilo Cruz adapted Nobel Prize winner Gabriel García Márquez’ short story into this play for young audiences. The magical tale takes place in an impoverished town close to the Caribbean Sea. Brother and sister Fefé and Momó encounter a mysterious creature that has fallen from the sky. At first they are afraid of him, but they soon come to believe that he is an angel who needs their help. When the adults in the village discover the creature, he becomes a symbol of what they want or need him to be: an angel and a curiosity, an answer to prayers and a moneymaking sideshow freak. Lakeland based Florida Dance Theater under the Artistic Direction of Carol Krajacic-Erkes has been a popular feature at the Miami Dance Festival since 2007. The company returns with a contemporary dance program that showcases its virtuoso dancers. Highlights of the performance include two new works by the company directors. A Night at the Museum
The Bass Museum of Art will host its annual fundraiser, “A Night at the Museum, tonight. The event is expected to attract more than 500 who will receive a private preview of “Charles LeDray: Bass Museum of Art,” curated by Bass Museum of Art Adjunct Curator, Steven Holmes. Artist Charles LeDray will be in attendance. The exhibition features works from LeDray’s major traveling exhibition, including his most ambitious piece, “Mens Suits.” This is the artist’s first museum exhibition in Florida, and will focus on creating a unique dialogue between four individual, powerful works.
