Books
Elizabeth the Queen
Meet Sally Bedell Smith, author of Elizabeth the Queen when she does a Meet & Greet at the Bal Harbour Shops tonight. Drawing on numerous interviews and never-before-revealed documents, acclaimed biographer Sally Bedell Smith pulls back the curtain to show in intimate detail the public and private lives of Queen Elizabeth II. Compulsively readable and scrupulously researched, Elizabeth the Queen is a close-up view of a woman we’ve known only from a distance, illuminating the lively personality, sense of humor, and canny intelligence with which she meets the most demanding work and family obligations. We discover the young girl who suddenly becomes “heiress presumptive” when her uncle abdicates the throne. Smith brings us inside the palace doors and into the Queen’s daily routines—the “red boxes” of documents she reviews each day, the weekly meetings she has had with twelve prime ministers, her physically demanding tours abroad, and the constant scrutiny of the press—as well as her personal relationships. It is a fascinating window into life at the center of the last great monarchy. 7:30pm. Free. Books and Books, 9700 Collins Ave; Bal Harbour. For info: booksandbooks.com

Metropole/Colony: Africa and Italy
The Wolfsonian/FIU is opening a new exhibit Metropole/Colony: Africa and Italy, which addresses central role African colonization played in shaping Italian national identity during the Fascist era (1922-1943). With the invasion of Ethiopia in 1935, Benito Mussolini launched an expansion of the Italian empire in northeast Africa beyond the territories already claimed by the previous regime between 1890 and 1911. Metropole/Colony  uses a variety of items from The Wolfsonian’s collection to demonstrate that the colonization of Africa was integral, rather than peripheral, to efforts by Mussolini’s Fascist regime and other institutions to forge a social and cultural consensus. For this project, the museum has collaborated with Professor David Rifkind, Department of Architecture, FIU, a specialist on Italian architecture during the Fascist era. The opening tonight is part of the Frost Museum’s Target Wednesday After Hours celebration. Free.
