Art Deco Weekend 2012
The Miami Design Preservation League presents the 35th annual Art Deco this weekend from January 13–15, 2012. The festival will include a fashion show, car show, musical performances, furniture fair and a lineup of walking tours.
The Miami Design Preservation League is a non-profit organization devoted to preserving, protecting, and promoting the cultural, social, economic, environmental and architectural integrity of the Miami Beach Architectural Historic District and all other areas of the City of Miami Beach where historic preservation is a concern.
The 2012 Art Deco Weekend music line up features: Doug Wimbish, Funky Nation’s Big Sam Williams, Suenalo, Adam Falcon, Ladell MclLin, Vinx, DJ Rampage, Kate Davis, Keith LeBlanc, Big Brooklyn Red, Big Poppa E, Alex Baugh and The Crazy Carls.
The Clevelander will host a fashion show at 7 p.m. on Friday, January 13, 2012. Professional models from Next Model Management will walk the runway showcasing the best in Miami Beach couture. Celebrity Judges include Mayor Matti Bower, Miami Beach Commissioner Michael Gongora, David Bernard (CBS 4 Chief Meteorologist) and Lisette Gonzalez (CBS 4 Meteorologist).
On Saturday January 14, 2011 make sure you hit up Ocean Drive for the annual parade starting at 11:00 am. The Miami Design Preservation League will also welcome back the very popular Arf deco Parade. Volunteers from Sofi K-9 will lead the doggy meet up that takes place Saturday morning at 10:30am on Ocean Drive and 6th Street just north of the Yellow Wash House in Lummus Park. Interested pooches are encouraged to dress up in thier glamorous and stylish costumes and march in the parade.

In tandem with the Miami Design Preservation League’s annual Art Deco Weekend festivities, which this year, celebrates its 35th year, The Betsy-South Beach, located on historic Ocean Drive, will celebrate with the First Annual Art Deco Jazz Week at The Betsy from Wednesday, January 11 – Sunday, January 15. Art Deco Weekend, the largest and longest running festival on Miami Beach, closes Ocean Drive to traffic from Friday, January 13 – Sunday, January 15. In addition to musical performances, the weekend highlights include the Annual ADW parade, classic car show, lecture series, film series, antique vendors, guided tours, Art Deco and MiMo furniture exhibit, and more.
The Betsy-South Beach, which presents a year-round calendar of arts, cultural and philanthropic events will enhance its regular Wednesday and Thursday night performance series with a number of additional acts in honor of the festival, featuring a line-up of notable performers. The Art Deco Festival was started in 1976 by the Miami Design Preservation League to attract visitors to Miami Beach’s Art Deco Historic District and to raise awareness and appreciation for the arts and culture of the Art Deco era. Art Deco Weekend is a free community oriented event that brings over 200,000 people to the Art Deco Architectural Historic District each January. MDPL produces over 85 educational events for Art Deco Weekend including guided walking tours, lecture series, film series, fashion shows, musical performances, antique furniture exhibit, our annual parade and more. This festival is an important part of Miami Beach’s heritage and culture.
Fashion Show at Art Deco Weekend
Art Deco Weekend is proud to present the 2nd Annual Art Deco Weekend Fashion Show. The Miami Design Preservation League has partnered with the Miami International University of Art & Design, Next Model Management, The Clevelander, and Wimbash to bring you an exciting hour of Art Deco, Fashion, and Music! You won’t want to miss this event!
Fourth year fashion students from Miami University of Art & Design developed a collection of formal evening gowns inspired by Miami Beach?s Art Deco Hotels along iconic Ocean Drive. The students’ pieces incorporated color, details, patterns and lines, unique to the composition stylings of Art Deco architecture. These gowns will reflect the influence of Art Deco on the era’s fashion trends.
Professional models from Next Model Management will walk the runway at the Clevelander to the musical talents of DJ Rampage and Doug Wimbish. Miami Beach’s own, George Neary will MC the event. The fashion show will have a panel of celebrity judges including Mayor Matti Bower, David Bernard (CBS 4′s Chief Meteorologist), Lisette Gonzalez (CBS 4 Meteorologist) and Michael Gongora (Miami Beach commissioner). The judges will be giving out prizes to the top designs of the evening.
