Art: Get Yourself Sketched for Free at Sketchy Party #2
By John Zur – SunPost Staff Writer
This Friday night, Sketchy Party #2, a free event open to the public and hosted by Beached Miami, will take place at Bakehouse Art Complex. Bringing together local artists and the public, Beached Miami founders Robby Campbell and Jordan Melnick are seeking to build upon the support they received for Sketchy Party #1, which saw 400 pack into the doors of Lester’s Café on June 28th.
According to Beached Miami’s website/blog, “The deal is similar to the first go-round back in June: a small army of local artists will be on hand to do your portrait, or, in the parlance of our sister site, sketchymiami.com, your “Sketchy”. Sitting for a Sketchy is as FREE as ripped clothing used to be. Entry to the party is also F-R-E-E. If you want to buy your Sketchy, it’ll cost you $30, with the proceeds split evenly between the artists and Sketchy Miami.”
Sketch Party #1 was initially supposed to be a launch party for sketchymiami.com, however it was a “big success” according to Campbell. “We had such a great response,” said Campbell, adding that the party turned into a “crazy free-for-all.”
The Bakehouse Complex is 3.2 acres with 70 artist studios. For Sketchy Party #2, about thirteen Bakehouse artists – and 10 non-Bakehouse artists – will be on hand to sketch. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase, with prizes such as original works and prints from several Bakehouse artists, a 132 piece metal box Prismacolor pencil set ($212.40 value) courtesy of Pearl South Miami, a Sweat Records Prize Pack that includes a limited edition Japanese Radiohead “King of Limbs” Blu-Ray Audio CD, one of the limited edition Discosoma Plains 7″s, an Iggy Pop x Sweat tee, a FriendsWithYou wallet and pin, and free Sketchys.
Sketchy Miami is also featuring a Sketchy Package ($10), which will includ Joey’s pizza, a beer à la keg courtesy of Vintage Liquor & Wine Bar, a bottle of Honest Tea, a collectible set of full-color Sketchy Miami postcards courtesy of Reprographic Services, a $2 discount and free glass of wine at O Cinema, which will be hosting a midnight screening that night, and free entry to the Vagabond for the official after party.
Campbell said that they anticipate changing venues for future events. Although there are no definite plans in place for Sketchy Party #3, he does promise that, as with all Sketchy Parties, “we’re always trying to push the envelope a bit.”
Sketchy Party #2 takes place on Friday, August 12th from 7pm to 11:30pm at Bakehouse Art Complex (561 NW 32nd Street).
