Comedian Steve Berke wants to run for mayor — on YouTube Steve Berke thinks it’s high time for change to come to Miami Beach and he wants to be the man to deliver. The comedian, Yale graduate and high-profile public face of the national effort to reform marijuana laws, held a raucous press conference Tuesday [...]

The Night Sky

Perfect for the kids! Crafted by local Miami artisan Ray Rosales, the Sky Ceiling, is an incredible “Glow-in-the-Dark” mural of the star-filled night sky, custom installed in any room. Rosales creates these exquisite trômpe-loeil masterpiece based in the tradition of Old World fresco artists. The most amazing part is that during daylight your room looks [...]

Politics: Alvarez Recall Not Enough

County Gov’t Deserves an Ass-Kicking, Too Remember when it was the city of Miami that was our Local Municipality Most Likely to Embarrass?  With its cast of characters led by disgraced city manager Cesar Odio and bribery-soliciting finance director Manohar Surana?  The FBI’s Operation Greenpalm?  A budget deficit of $68 million?  A bond rating somewhere [...]

Cinema: Oscar’s Margins

Another Year We all have people like Mary in our lives. The boozy, self-destructive woman at the heart of Mike Leigh’s poignant kitchen sink drama Another Year is the kind of acquaintance who shows up at your doorstep and, a few drinks later, wails to you about all her troubles before passing out in the [...]

Bound: Very Bad Company

Sidling Up to the Beautiful Uglies in T. Jefferson Parker’s The Border Lords Man, would I dig going to a dinner party in T. Jefferson Parker’s head. The fare would undoubtedly be rare and bloody; the fete itself would probably be held in the back room one of Purgatory’s best saloons. And if the guests [...]

Dance: Rosie Herrera Dance Theatre Grieves and Grooves

There were only two people in the world Rosie Herrera wanted to dance for: German dance theater pioneer Pina Bausch and global pop icon Michael Jackson. Both her dance heroes passed away within days of each other, in June 2009. Six months later, Herrera joined the South Florida dance community in mourning beloved local choreographer Jennylin Duany, who left behind many bereft collaborators, as well as a young husband and a baby daughter.

The Urbanist

Tony Goldman, grandfather of South Beach, isn’t slowing down one bit For Tony Goldman, it always begins with a vision. Literally. “I had a terrible reading problem when I was growing up,” says Goldman, the preservationist-developer who gives the latter a good name. “Because of that I put a lot into visual catalogue. I think [...]

Dance: Dance From Brazil and Hialeah Shape New Boundaries

Last Saturday the Bale Folclorico da Bahia performed at the Adrienne Arsht Center and they kept it real. And I mean REAL. The performance was so full of truth, connection, mastery and the power of the ancestors, that not everyone in the audience could match the vibration. Some left. This actually pleased me, knowing that art and performance are meant to push boundaries and help us confront our own limitations, I knew the work was doing its job. Not everyone last Saturday was ready to confront their own racism and fears and not every chakra was ready to receive the many gifts that the performers and the deities they represented were offering.

Politics: Clear the Tracks! Rick’s on a Roll(over)

Well, we all figured it was only a matter of time before the Slick Rick Demolition Express came a-barrelin’ down the tracks at breakneck speed, splintering and demolishing every bit of progress in its path, hurtling the Sunshine State that much farther into the recesses of a medieval darkness. We just didn’t count on the [...]

Three’s a Charm

How many times did you get busy last week? Yeah, I know this is a pretty personal question. But I’m only asking because I care about your health. The good doctor (me) says we should aim to do the deed at least three times a week, even if another person isn’t involved. Sometimes, and especially [...]

Profiles: Scott Cunningham

PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY YOU SHOULD KNOW Scott Cunningham Poetic Wonderer Who are you? I’m a husband to Alexandra Cunningham and a father to two very small, very poorly-behaved dogs. And a poet. What do you do in real life? I direct a faux-university called University of Wynwood (www.universityofwynwood.org) which produces a county-wide poetry festival [...]

Politics: Pay Me $8 to Stare at Me and I’ll Throw in Lunch

Yep, the end of days must surely be imminent. Thousands of your cerebrally-challenged neighbors and mine – who evidently don’t believe they’ve been hit hard enough in the wallets by property tax hikes, a rising cost of living, and having to live one paycheck to another – threw frugality (and better judgment) to the wind [...]
